Nazi Commandants & Staff of the Killing Centers

Auschwitz

  • Commandant: Rudolf Hoess: known as Ruthless and Brutal: >tried for War Crimes, Hoss initially 'escaped' to England but was tried as a war criminal after the war. He was tried at a tribunal in Warsaw, and then hung at Auschwitz. In a prison wrote a report on Auschwitz and his function in it, partially summarized in Auschwitz Chronicles -an archival data base which includes German Federal and auschwitz archives. While revisionist like to argue against massive gassings at the killing centers, Hoess was quite clear about his own eyewitness account: "The gassing was carried out in the detention cells of Block 11. Protected by a gas mask, I watched the killing myself. In the crowded cells, death came instantaneously the moment the Zyklon B was thrown in. A short, almost smothered cry, and it was all over... I must even admit that this gassing set my mind at rest, for the mass extermination of the Jews was to start soon, and at that time neither Eichmann nor I was certain as to how these mass killings were to be carried out. It would be by gas, but we did not know which gas and how it was to be used. Now we had the gas, and we had established a procedure." Wife and children lived at Auschwitz, Catholic. Had an affair with a Jewish inmate, and hid the affair by having her gassed. Responsible for the Great majority of deaths at Auschwitz, reported Statistics and accountable to Eichmann.See Gestapo & Other Decision-Makers

  • SS Brigadier General Hans Kammler headed Mittelbau -Dora-Rottleberode and Stemped-Gardelegen.. Kammler had previously headed the construction of camps and gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Maidenek, and Belzec.
  • Werner Von Braun, not officially on staff oversaw work of the A2s and the V2 rockets both at Peenemunde and at the complex of Mittelbau Dora. The degree of his involvement had to have been substantial as he was one of the moving forces behind rocketry development in Germany: those at Peenemunde after the bombing either moved with the project to Mittelbau-Dora or 'oversaw' the continuing work. He denied seeing mistreatment of prisoners in order to enter the US in the 50s, but had to have seen it since the inmates were never allowed above ground where the factories moved.
  • SS-Untersturmführer Erhart Brauny-sentenced to prison, the transport leader of those evacuated from the Dora camp. "Brauny was accused of "numerous and terrible beatings, mistreatment of prisoners and acts of personal sadism against inmates of Rottleberode" in addition to being charged with responsibility for the Gardelegen "2
  • Kreisleiter of Gardelegen, Gerhard Thiele: a civilian, lower level Nazi Official
