SPOILS OF WAR: THE UKRAINE FEEDS GERMANY
In the notes of Josef Goebbels the motive of the Reich is made clear: the populace of the Ukraine
while collaborating with the Nazis, is still inferior to the Nazis. They do however serve a purpose:
they aid in the food supplies of war time Germany. As the war turned to the worse in 1941 to 1942,
most of Europe experienced devastating food restrictions: sugar was considered a luxury, and strictly
rationed as were other more basic foodstuffs. Calorie reductions for areas not in the war zones were
still pronounced, and differed according to country and race. The Jews were starving in Ghettos
and Camps, but during this year, German intake of calories and availability of bread and meat went
up: the pivotal event was the takeover of the Ukraine, the 'Breadbasket' of Europe.
