The Extreme "Judenrein"That the Nazis intended to eradicate Judaism and the Jew in Europe in the 1940s is hardly unknown: the agenda of 'Judenrein is present in most of the coordinated effort of Reich conquest: Judenrein was the move to remove from German and then European Culture and Society every trace of Jewish influence and the Jewish bloodline possible. The Nazis held a central belief that the Culture as well as the religion of the Jews was degenerate and the 'race' of Jews was an archaic one, which once purged, would allow a pure 'Herrenvolk" or Master Race to move forward, which of course they defined as their own, Nordic Aryan one.under development So extreme were the planners of the "Final Solution" in this view, that they saw that virtually every aspect, mention or 'taint' of Jewishness must be removed, including any internal or even 'psychological' trace. Religious traces were removed by urging and then legislating pastors to remove all mention of Jewish influence in the New Testament and divorcing the Old Testament. (See Neo-Marcionism in the 3rd Reich) Jewish Art was cleansed as was Jewish music, literature and Theatre, Synagogues were closed and burned, reading and teaching the Torah were outlawed eventually as was teaching even mercy towards the Jew. (See Zedlacher Letter) While it is alluded to in several points of history, one of the points of 'judenrein' which affected the Church and personal life greatly among Germans, was a loosely defined 'doctrine', or perhaps better, 'discussion' or interpretation regarding the "Jew within". On a 'psychological' or self-definition note, both Hitler and Goebbels referred vaguely to this concept, or were described as having deep concern about whether their own bloodlines contained the 'taint' of jewishness; it is often reported that Hitler's natural father was Jewish, and that the conflicted Hitler had turmoil regarding his own genetic heritage. Heydrich, the director of the Einsatzgruppen is reported to have been deeply concerned about his racial purity, because of his relations with the name 'Süss', which was also a Jewish name. One account speaks of his bouts of self-hatred and wishing to 'exorcise' the 'Jew within' exemplified by his shooting in rage at his image in a mirror. x
The "Doctrinal" Jew WithinPerhaps the place this 'positing' came out the most was in a position advocated by some in the Deutsche Christian [DC], or German Christian Church which compromised with Nazi theology. Many of their tenets, as mentioned elsewhere, were 'redefined' or rather wildly interpreted points of traditional doctrine, rewritten or taught to align with Nazi positins or beliefs. In the DC adaptation, the Sin nature, spoken of often in the Epistles of St. Paul were was reinterpreted or labelled, "the Jew within" so that the expulsion of or exorcising of the "jew within" was equated with having victory over carnality or the sin nature. A clear example of this appears in the story of ..., in the film "The Ninth Day"xx in which a priest, allowed to return from his interment in Dachau[ck] for 9 days, was urged to recant his positions against the German treatment of the Jews and Catholic faith, in exchange for which he would be allowed his freedom. If he did not recant, he would be placing other clergy at risk of death. In a conversation with the local Nazi regent, the doctrine is discussed, not as doctrine but as fact in which the Nazi officer refers to his own struggle with 'the jew within'. The Priest is urged to come to terms with his, although he recognizes the heresy at once.
The Christian Doctrine vs the Deutsche Christian DoctrineThe Biblical Christian Doctrine of the Sin nature is fairly clear across denominational positions and historical positions. When the Fall came, and Adam and Eve were forced to leave the Garden of Eden, they were encumbered with the curse of sin and death, accompanied by one of hard work and toil. Catholic theologians have tagged the sin against God as "Original Sin" while Protestant and Evangelicals refer to it as the Sin nature, but both are indicating the Curse of Sin which we are born into.
