Hard to Imagine, but in the Ghettos Orchestras thrived, as people looked for the remnants of normal life to fill their souls. The Music of Europe was bittersweet during the Shoah years: many of the very best Classical musicians and composers were exiled: Great Musicians were forced either into aliyahs or hiding or enforced servitude to the Nazis where they were used either for amusement and then killed, or to play for show to the World, or worst of all to play for those on their way to slave labor and death in the Killing Centers. Music thrived in Terezin, where high profile musicians and orchestra members were sent: but only a few of the Musicians survived, most sent to and killed at Auschwitz or Furstenberg. Greats such as Schoenberg, Haas, Ullmann are kept alive today by performance of their music all over the world. The most notable Piece, "The Emperor of the Atlantis" , a thinly veiled protest against the Tyranny of the Third Reich has continued today as a masterpiece of musical defiance. "Brundibar" a Children's Opera and Chorale about two children's defiance against an ogre who makes life miserable was a raised fist for children of all ages under Tyranny.
