It is an interesting juxtaposition to me to read the article the day after completing an article on Mengele for my website on Shoah, or Holocaust education for the Church. Research into Genetic Engineering, once horrified the population at large and the Christian. Now it is seen as a perverse redemption. We will no longer grow old, or be short. We will not have arthritis, or disabilities, no diabetes or anomalies. Perhaps in the near future we can all have blond hair and blue eyes, with a perfect physique. As some one who has sat on a Medical Ethics board (for Research ethics) and who has studied the course of the Eugenics movement in the Shoah, I am deeply concerned for our thinking that we are in any way improving the human condition by seeking to eradicate every human difference in the goal of some Master Race-like perfection: we think that perfection in the carnal and physical will equate with perfection in the spirit: this is truly the grandest hoax in human history: it was perpetrated by the Serpent in the Garden, when he admonished Eve to be as God. It is actually more often true that the greatest in Spirit are the ones who have met the greatest obstacles, physical and otherwise. I would also like to be thin and young again, but to defy the gravity of God in doing it would make us all far different people. I don't know if people realize that the goals of the National Socialists (Nazis) in the Third Reich, which we thought we conquered when Berlin fell, have almost all continued towards their goal without them. We have: A Unified Europe: they envisioned a New European Order also -A Eugenics program once thought to be hellish which we now welcome as "Human Engineering" or Genetic engineering. It has gained credibility as science, not because it is, but because it works; and as long as it takes away pain or makes us more presentable, even Christians welcome it, even as it defies God as creator and sovereign. -They also wished for a Master Race of perfected human beings -They wished for a grand ecumenism which they knew would defeat the Church and leave them as replacement -They replaced ethics and moral concern with efficacy and utilitarianism: if it will work, it is good. They not only harvested cadavers for 'product' but even the living: we are so close to that it should chill your soul. -They advocated law and order, the strength of a nation, home, family and fertility, the very things we as Christians advocate only without the sovereign guidance of the Holy Spirit. Though I agree with the "Christian-Right" on many issues, right issues without heart or love are not different than theirs. We cannot have a Christianity apart from the love and Word of God. Lastly, where are we headed? What other traits are we not happy with? Dark hair and Eyes? What skin color is optimal? Should we consider a Euthanasia program for the mentally impaired and weed it out of our 'gene pool' in a new racial/trait cleansing? And the Jews, so eminent in God's Last hours, will we stand by as Genetic Engineers begin to look at whom they consider 'distressing'? We think it was so different then. So very different. We have merely continued their work. ebest
