comprised of Roman Catholic Central Party members, Catholicism was
seen as a threat to Protestant Germany
comprised of Socialists who were viewed as avenues in for Bolshevism
or Communism
Form of Government
Catholic/Socialist Rule was anathema to several centuries of preceding
politics and forms
The Government: the republic was experimental
Religious Tension
Protestant-Catholic relations were tense since the time of the
reformation, but each province ruled under the religion of its Prince.
(see "Cuis
regio, eius religio")
Protestantism tied previously to Princes and imperialists, they were
dismayed about Catholic Government control, in that what seemed like more
freedom (A Republic) would be less for them.
Catholic control of the government led to the 28 Province federation
of Protestants
Church-State ties were cut financial bonds broken, funding for
Christian schools cut off.
